What does the law say?

In taxis, private hire vehicles and minicabs, child car seats are not a legal requirement. But child passengers must wear them if they are supplied:

• Children aged under three can only travel in the front of a cab if carried in an appropriate child seat. Otherwise, they will need to go in the rear of the vehicle without a taxi infant car seat, although a seat-belt has been a legal requirement for more than 30 years.
• Children aged between three and 12 (or who are at least 135cm tall) can travel in the back of a cab, but must use a child’s car seat if provided, or at seat-belt if not, or if the one supplied is unsuitable.
• Children aged 12 and above, or younger kids taller than 135cm, must wear their own seat-belts. So child car seats in taxis are unnecessary for this age group.
